W10 to curb ransomware with new feature
Microsoft is working on a new feature for Windows 10 to fight off ransomware. Currently folders have user permissions which means if another user tries to access that folder they can't. Now Microsoft is working on an application list allowed to access selected folders. This will mean only programs on the approved list (some being designated by Microsoft, like Windows Defender, other manually added by users) can access that specified folder.

The end goal is to ensure programs running under a specific user can't access folder they're not supposed to. So if a user does get infected with ransomware then they don't lose everything because the ransomware itself doesn't have permission to access/modify those folders.

Not a bad idea... But it's going to depend on whether or not malware writers can figure out some loophole to make their file piggyback on a known good one. So like if word can edit in a document folder that malware creators don't hijack word to run the encryption in that/all folders.
