Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
Several days had passed since the Cabal factory issue. The reports had all come in and they were scrutinizing everything with extreme care so nothing slipped through their fingers. But thus far nothing had turned up. It seemed to be exactly like the management had stated. So Signas turned his attention to other matters and let his Navigators handle that aspect. Signas, instead, had been busy planning numerous other missions and events.

He gave a bit of a sigh as he pushed away from his desk. The report he was working on was coming along very slowly. He kept having to readjust the budget in order to make the acquisitions to repair some of the space stations. Helios had been operating for over 50 years already and was in need of some more work. And although he never used Helios's trump card, he had relied heavily on it's optics. Plus there were a half dozen others that needed to be fixed up. But the budgets for the new armours needed approving and they were a bit higher priority. Mavericks were mobilizing in force unlike seen in a long time. Something was going to happen soon. The question was what though.

And then of course he was curious about the latest mission he'd sent X and Zero on. Another maverick had attacked a power plant. It marked the third power plant targeted in as many days. And Signas wanted to know why. His intel on their plans, thus far, had been short. But he knew that if they were stepping up attacks on power plans in one region they must have been ready to make a move there.

However he didn't get a lot of time to think about the mission before an alert came across his screen. Halo Arms was calling. He answered the call instantly but the second he did the line went dead. At once he opened a channel to Alia:
“Alia, I just got a call from Halo Arms. But the line dropped before they could say anything. Can you check on it and see if anything is amiss?”
“Ok, just give me one second.” Alia replied.

A few seconds later she replied.
“The transmission originated from their orbital development platform and was cut off from their end suddenly. It doesn't look like the call ended naturally, something interferred.”

“Alia, summon team 60... we have a situation.” was all Signas replied with.

A short time later the entire team 60 was gathered in one of the briefing rooms. Alia stood at the front of the room. Once everyone was inside, she began...

“Hunters, Halo Arms’s orbital space station is under attack.” And with that an image of the space station appeared on screen behind her. Several blips and dots appeared to designate important bits of info.
“They were contracted by us to develop the next generation laser defense network to retrofit the old Helios class stations with more precise targeting systems to make it possible to shoot down enemy missiles with greater accuracy.” A few images flashed to show the various satellites she was referring to.
“So it goes without saying that you should be careful in their laser labs. They have some of the most powerful lasers in there... class 8 and above lasers. Those can cut through most armor easily, even with your newer ones it won't matter a lot. So be extremely careful. We don't know what the enemy has planned for you.” Alia paused for a second.

“As a secondary note, it seems the maverick attacked the life support systems, thankfully there were no humans on board so the lack of oxygen won't be an issue. But artificial gravity on the station may be down in places or off entirely. Be extremely cautious with this as weapon fire will cause people to go flying.”

“When you're ready to go, just head to the teleportation area and we'll send you. Good luck hunters.” And with that Alia concluded her breifing.

When they arrived aboard the space station's teleport area, the lights were dim. Only some were actually on, others flashed occasionally to show that the power was under heavy draw or that the systems were damaged. Until they got to the control room it'd be impossible to tell.
One of the hunters stepped forward and when they did they went careening into the opposite wall.
“Watch your step, there is gravity... but it's pretty low.”

“We should find the control room first” One of the hunters suggested. They had a map of the area so thankfully they could find the control room easily enough.
“It's just down that hallway and then up one level. The laser room is in the middle of the station, let's avoid that for now...” They stated.

RE: Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
Dark and cold. One hunter floated to the edge of the hallway and hit the wall. Soft or not, no sound was made. A quite, dark, cold abyss of a mission. There was also the fear of missing a shot, putting Scopes at a disadvantage. He lifted off the ground and headed down the hall, heating up his right hand. The orange glow illuminated the hallway around him, granting more value than the flickering lights. Floating down he passed the Laser lab, a white door with an electronic sign that wasn't working. Thankfully the layout at least let them know what was where.

RE: Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
Sub received the same summons as everyone else in Unit 60 and joined them for a quick briefing. In the days since the mission he'd followed up on the infighting between hunter and security forces and he wasn't buying the line of bullshit that Signas passed for an explanation. Even if that were the truth it was a completely unacceptable breakdown of protocol, there had to be more going on than the higher ups were sharing. Sub wondered if the hunters had pissed off any other allied organizations, government of private. It would be nice to know going into the next mission if he could expect more friendly fire from their supposed allies. Or if he were even fighting for the right side.

And now they were headed to an orbiting development lab owned by Halo Arms, another weapons developer under hunter bankroll. They had been apparently contracted to develop an advanced lazer defense system, and it sounded like the hunters hadn't gotten it yet. Was this what the mavericks were looking for? Maybe this time they'd be able to figure out the end goal of this arms race.

He did wonder how the mavericks got on board however. The platform was in space, which meant that you'd likely have to teleport in, you couldn't just float up to the airlock and slip in. Which meant there was an insider, or the mavericks had a very good hacker on board. At least the hunter party was not locked out, the group warped in without an issue. Also good. It would be an unfortunate way to go if the mavericks had a welcoming party surrounding the telepad with death rays on all sides.

Their first objective was the command room. There were no humans on board but it was still possible there could be reploid survivors. Sub took point, followed closely by AIO who was clearly back to working order. That was good, the newer hunter had barely held together last mission. Sub drew out his katana, opting for a more precise weapon in the corridor. It wouldn't do to knock out a window with some stray blaster fire.

The lights flickered on and off, but at the end of the hallway Sub could make out the ladder that would take them up to the control room level. It looked like it was sealed off but that wasn't unusual for a space station, but they'd find out soon enough whether it was locked.

RE: Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
Traversing the hallway was quick and painless, but once they reached the control room the realised that things weren't going to be so easy. The hatch to enter the room was sealed shut for some reason. A keypanel beside the control room flashed angrily red when they pushed the open command. It then displayed a message to explain why.
'Control room oxygen sealed. Use airlock on far side to enter.' was written on the panel.

"Looks like we have to go around." Serah stated through comms. She started to move towards the hall to make her way around to the other side when the laser lab's door snapped open and a rush of oxygen hit. Without the gravity to hold her down the movement pushed her back. At once a dozen metools flew out of the open door. They were standard size, except with small jets instead of legs. Atop their heads were a series of small arms, likely used for repairs.

The metools open fired with their mouth lasers causing hunters to scramble to avoid firing. The metool's shots struck against the walls of the station and burned a small spot into the wall, not enough to actually burn through and pierce to the outside. But certainly enough that repeated shots would cause damage. If there weren't any oxygen inside the area then holes to outside wouldn't be an issue simply because there wouldn't be any suction to pull them out into space. But thanks to the metools releasing oxygen from the laser lab they had ensured that piercing the outside would result in a vacuum.

If they could get into the laser lab they could activate the oxygen pumps and draw the air out, taking out the problem. But that meant getting into the lab.
Serah glanced over at the control panel to the control room. With oxygen restored that would have been an easy way in. But one of the metools shot the panel and sent a shower of sparks cascading off it. Denying them entry that way.

Furthermore several shutters in the hallways slammed shut, preventing hunters from going down the hallway and avoiding the laser lab. It looked like the maverick wanted them to go through the laser labs...

RE: Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
Pulling a round-about was tedious. The silence and cold atmosphere this base held was eeary. Any weak-willed reploird would be cringing in their bolts at this. The team had passed the deadly laser room, which turned out to be a trap. The doors rushed open and an ambush commenced.

Roughly 5 Mettool flew out at the crew, each of them designed specifically for space. Shots fired off, and though weak, they could harm the surroundings. That was not to be permitted. Scopes chopped down on the first met that was close to him. The little guy attempted to catch his hand with his repair arms, however the heat effect that was already active as a light source cleaved through them. The chop knocked the helmet just right, causing the met to repel against it and tilt backwards, exposing its face. Scopes finger singed across its delicate face, burning through part of its cpu. The met floated down, and one more progressed towards him, firing off a few shots.

Scopes reacted to this, blocking the shots with his arm. Luckily they didn't do too much, and his tough armor allowed him to hold fast while his spare arm became the Scopes buster. The met was closing in, but keeping out of arms reach, trying to get the right spacing. At the moment it paused from firing, Scopes free arm shot up, bursting out a low-powered shot. The pink plasma flew fast, and connected into the met's big ol ugly eyes, burning halfway through its body before the shot dissipated. As the prior, this met also slowly fell.

RE: Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
It appeared as though the team was being funneled down a very specific path. Normally Sub would be opposed to moving directly into the position their enemy wanted, but time was of essence here and the attack had happened very suddenly, it was highly unlikely that the mavericks had managed to convert the station into a death trap in such a short time period. Yes, they were now having to battle a small force of mets, but they looked like they were more for repair than combat. What was most frustrating about the metools, besides the obvious fact that they were a stall tactic, was that they likely belonged to Halo Arms and they were once again forced into battle with friendly forces.

Behind him AIO charged his buster and fired a series of ice shots. Upon contact the mets were frozen solid and dropped harmlessly to the floor, or else floated away in the low gravity. Sub stepped forward, deflecting small fire from the enemy mets with his katana. When he got close he began swinging at the met helmets as hard as he could, knowing full well that he wouldn't inflict damage. But the force of his blows did cause the met to careen off course, spinning in the low gravity. Sub lashed out with a powerful side kick, sending the met slamming into the wall. He dashed forward and grabbed the next met, disregarding the small arms fire and grabbed it by the base of the helmet. The metool tried to burn his hand with its welding tools but Sub didn't hold on for long. Instead he threw the metool like a frisbee into the group floating behind it, causing them all to spin wildly as they struggled to balance their flight. AIO charged another icy blast and froze the entire group.

RE: Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
Scopes and Sub quickly dispatched a few of them with their techniques, but it was AIO who had the right idea in Serah's mind. Freezing them was the way to go. She kicked one away and sent it flying. She quickly spun around and fired one of her diffusion wave attacks to take that met out of the fight. Her shot hit it and quickly encapsulated it in ice. But the momentum from her kick and then her attack's impact kept it going into the laser lab.

A second later a bright flash of green erupted from inside the lab and the slight stench of fried circuits flowed out. The downed met had hit one of the laser stations and it didn't end well for that poor met.

By this time though AIO's ice shot (with some help from Sub) had frozen most of the mets. Without any sort of heating system they'd stay frozen for a while. Even if they managed to cut through the ice with their welders they wouldn't be able to free themselves any time soon (or at all really since their welders would only free a small space around the welder and not them entirely). Their jets likely wouldn't be powerful enough to melt through either.

Serah looked back at the now sealed control room. It's panel sparked a few more times then went dead. They weren't going to be able to enter there. They could try cutting their way in now, but it'd take some time and that'd give plenty of time for whomever was on the other side to ready a defense or surprise attack. The laser room was still the quicker, if somewhat unsafe, option.

She cautiously made her way towards the door. She peered in slowly though she couldn't see much. The lights inside had gone off. She snapped her night-vision mode on, but it did little good in this case. The black of space and little ambient light anyway meant she had little more than a green tinged blackness.

She eased into the room, slowly and as low to the ground as she could. She didn't know what waited inside for certain. And without being able to see it presented some challenges of it's own. She fumbled around on the side of the wall trying to locate a lightswitch or something, and soon she did find a switch. She pressed it and a single light in the centre of the room flickered to life. It showed a single experiment inside a case of sorts. Then the darkened display case receded and they could see what was inside... A green beam was arcing between several points.
Was that what had cut into the met? How had it done so?
More questions raced through her mind, but time was short and they needed to move. She started towards the room when suddenly the questions were answered. The green beam arced out of the display and lashed into the ground where she had intended to step. A black burn mark and slight indent where the heat cut into the floor panel was all that was left. The green beam having retreated as quick as it had arrived.

RE: Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
(not going to lie, kinda unsure what this room all is. So short post for Vile, VZ I'll leave it open for you to kinda give an idea what we are allowed to fallow up with)

With the peasants disposed of, the team made their way forward. Serah had taken point and cautiously ventured into the darkened new room. Scopes switched his sights to thermal, reading the area for anything producing heat. In this vacuum anything else should appear. From the center, a light came on, and a crate shown. Serah moved forward, and there was an immediate reaction from the center. Beams, that shown brighter than anything else on the radar bounced out. Scopes reached out, grasping Serah on the shoulder and pulled her back as the beam hit the floor beneath her. Likely she'd bicker about this, but clearly moving forward would cause team casualties that they didn't have the time to handle.

Scopes reported back to Alia, hopefully this time she would relay some decent news.
"Alia, come in. We have encountered some of those beams you mentioned. Are there any files on disarming them? We don't want to destroy anything that we are funding." He pointed his buster at the crate. "I will destroy this if not."

RE: Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
Serah felt herself pulled backwards by a teammate, due to the low gravity she ended up slamming into the wall behind her. She went to radio to whomever had done that but was cut off when Scopes radioed to Alia to ask about destroying the crate. Though she realised what had happened, seeing the black mark on the floor where she would have stepped.

Static crackled in the line for a second before Alia's voice rang through.
"Give me a second to see what they were working on there. You might be able to disable it instead."

Second passed and Alia's voice was heard again.
"It looks like they're testing a new power system for spacefaring lasers in that room. If you cut the power to that laser you should be able to pass without problems. Though don't destroy the laser array or power supply if you can avoid it. We're not sure what kind of power system it's using so it could be highly reactive if damaged. Though there should be several wires leading to the laser system, you could safely destroy them without affecting the laser or power supply. Also because this is Halo Arms, watch out for their targeting systems... they're top notch. Though you could always target the sensors, there should be an array in each corner and one by the laser itself. Doing that should stop the laser from firing also. Either option will get you through. Don't worry about weapon fire in there, that room has been specially designed to withstand class 9 lasers so your weapons won't be able to destroy it."

Serah, having heard the transmission stepped forward to just before the laser had attacked. She raised her buster and unleashed a Diffusion Wave aimed at the laser's left side where a wire was visible. Figuring that a little cold would stop the battery. But her hopes were dashed when the laser emitter kicked on and the green beam sliced directly through the projectile and caused it to burst into snowflakes.
Serah would have smiled at the laser's precision if it weren't for the fact her attack had been destroyed. She realised quickly that none of her projectiles would be effective here, that laser would just slice cleanly though them.

She stepped back and opened her comm:
"My projectiles won't work. There must be another way. Maybe a panel or something to slow it down? Or maybe we'll just have to attack quicker than it can handle."

RE: Attention Rookies: Zero - Chapter 8
OOC: Seems like might have written into a corner here... Apologies.

IN:

A second later Alia responded.
"There should be one right by the door there. Press the emergency button and it should override the experiments."

Serah made her way to the panel, exactly as indicated it would be, and pressed the button. Though pressing it had the exact opposite effect expected. The room lit up a bright green as a trio of lasers cut into the area, scorching the ground and ceiling. But when it seemed like they'd land on the hunters the button finally acted as it was supposed to and cut the power to the experiment. The lasers flashed again and then vanished leaving the area dark again.

Serah pulsed energy to the crystal on the back of her hand, priming it to fire a spark hook (also causing it to glow) and moved into the area. Along the opposite wall was yet another panel, this time it had what looked to be obvious door controls. Serah pushed them and the door slid open and allowed access to the other side of the station.

The other hallway was equally as black, gravity here was off too. As she floated down the hallway, soft light from her hand reflecting off the walls, she couldn't help but feel a heightened sense of fear. Even with a team of hunters here, they were all alone in a space station with minimal power up against an opponent that could do who knows what and was who knows where. It was the making of a perfect horror movie to her.

But once she passed through the hallway without any occurrences her anxiety heightened. She kept expecting an attack from the shadows, but the maverick seemed to be busy with whatever their task was and figured that the hunters would be indisposed for much longer.

Finally she reached the other side of the entrance to the control room. Sure enough the door was open and a ladder reached up to the next level. Serah peered up the ladder and nothing was there. Slowly she eased herself up the rungs, half expecting a trap of some kind. But there was nothing.

Once on the upper level the control room was directly ahead. It sat overlooking the experiment room below. A narrow walkway leading to the room, over top of one-way mirrors (so observers could see the experiments below without having to worry about harmful effects).

The control room itself was fairly spacious, meant for a whole team of people. Though it was empty when Serah arrived. She entered the room cautiously. The lights were on inside and the various terminals lit up with projects and highly technical notes. Most of which made no sense to Serah. She made her way towards what looked to be the main control terminal for the station itself, evident by a schematic of the station and a quick overview of issues.
The lights were down all over, life support was offline, gravity was minimal. It seemed like all the power itself was being siphoned off somewhere. Serah thought about going to check the solar panels outside, but that seemed like it'd be an obvious trap. And what better a way to get rid of a hunter team than by pitching them off into space? To drift until they ran out of power and shut down.

So instead of going outside, Serah pressed a few keys on the terminal and shut down the solar panels. She then diverted all power from reserves to powering the lights. There wasn't enough to return full gravity so partial gravity would have to do. But with the power now confined to inside the fight would have to be here.

Sure enough, a few minutes later the terminal confirmed a hatch from outside had been opened. Something had breeched the station. The system sealed the door automatically, but not before something would have made it inside.

"Brace yourself, something is coming." Serah stated to the team.

And as if on cue the floor outside the control centre lit up and a beam of brilliant blue shot through, slicing a clean hole in the floor. The chunk of floor popped up and smashed against the ceiling as the maverick made it's grand appearance.

Personality: Laelaps is eager to please her master and prove her worth. She seeks every challenge she can and makes no attempt to run away even from something that might be tough. She is also quite playful, if a bit sadistic about it. She has no problem causing pain and suffering.

Back Story:
Laser Laelaps was designed to work with a research team studying the effects of lasers. As a result she was fitted with numerous high tech laser generation systems. Even before she became a maverick she viewed the tests as a game. A chance to prove herself. So when the chance to test a new type of laser deflection medium in a zero gravity environment presented itself she jumped at the chanced. She was took her spot in on the crew of a space station and began helping the crew. However an unfortunate incident occurred. A solar flare affected the station's solar power grid temporarily overloading it, and by extension… Laser herself. This happened in the middle of a new test. The resulting power surge blew the new material apart, ripped Laser's systems apart and severely injured the crew. Help arrived too late and found only Laser left, a twitching mess.

She was taken back to Earth for repairs. After receiving repairs she submitted a report on the incident and was quickly blamed by the company for it. They declared her at fault and wanted her shut down for it. Distraught over what had happened and how she had been betrayed she fled and Mavericks found her not too long after. She willingly joined them.
